White House Proposal Would Ease FBI Access to Records of Internet Activity
White House proposal would ease FBI access to records of Internet activity Lawyer Stewart Baker said the change would sometimes "mean giving a lot more information to the FBI." By Ellen Nakashima Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, July 29, 2010 The Obama administration is seeking to make it easier for the FBI to compel companies to turn over records of an individual's Internet activity without a court order if agents deem the information relevant to a terrorism or intelligence investigation. The administration wants to add just four words -- "electronic communication transactional records" -- to a list of items that the law says the FBI may demand without a judge's approval. Government lawyers say this category of information includes the addresses to which an Internet user sends e-mail; the times and dates e-mail was sent and received; and possibly a user's browser history. It does not include, as the lawyers hasten to point out, the "content" of e-mail or other Int

Fahrenthold and Leslie Tamura Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, July 29, 2010 Back in May, BP's chief executive told a British newspaper that "the Gulf of Mexico is a very big ocean," and the vast amounts of oil and chemical dispersants dumped into it were small by comparison. "Many are to blame" for the reaction that followed, he said, "including my own administration." Her whole story, Obama said he told Sherrod, "is exactly the kind of story we need to hear in America (because) we all have our biases." The

The BP Spill: Has the Damage Been Exaggerated?
1 hour ago · President Obama has called the BP oil spill "the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced," and so has just about everyone else. Green groups are sounding alarms about the "Catastrophe Along the Gulf Coast," while CBS, Fox and MSNBC slap "Disaster in the Gulf" chryons on all their spill-related news. Even BP fall guy Tony Hayward, after some early happy talk, admitted the spill was an "environmental catastrophe." The obnoxious anti-environmentalist Rush Limbaugh has been a rare voice

Jul 28 · Many ordinary Americans speculate about the “Powers That Be” (PTB), the unelected but powerful and shadowy elite who seem to exercise influence over national and world events far more than a lot of people realize. Yet because of their shadowy nature they are very difficult to talk about with much confidence. Despite their often minimal visibility, they seem to have their fingerprints over much of our nation’s history. Their ultimate purpose and motives can only be guessed at, but two aspects

Jul 28 · Ernest Partridge The Crisis Papers In the early sixties, the young black students in the South had had enough. Enough separate drinking fountains, enough all-night drives because no motel would provide a room, and enough refusal of service at restaurants and lunch counters. “Screw this,” they said, and so they sat at Woolworth’s lunch counters anyway, where they were taunted, spat upon, beaten, and arrested. Jul 27 · On Tuesday evening, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill already passed by the Senate that funds a $33 billion, 30,000-troop escalation in Afghanistan. The vote was 308 to 114. What could the good news possibly be? The first good news is that, while we had no more than 35 congress members who would vote against war funding a year ago, or perhaps 55 when it was an easy vote with no pressure, we've now got 114. That's serious progress. That's a far more dramatic increase than we'

Jul 27 · There is a lot to be said for national standards to be met in education. But there is a lot to think about as well. Like who is playing a huge role as the government sets those standards. And surprise, surprise...it's Bill Gates and Foundation. A number of recent news items on education should demonstrate to educators how little attention the political establishment has paid to the legitimate concerns of teachers. That is because the so-called “educational reform” movements that wer
